You're reading: Seven children suffer gunshot, fragment injuries in Donetsk region in May

Seven children aged between four and 17 have been injured as a result of the hostilities in the Donetsk region over the past 20 days, according to the regional state administration. 

Most children were injured in Sloviansk, the spokesperson said on Thursday.

“On May 9, a 12-year-old child suffered a gunshot injury in the abdomen and shoulder during a walk. He was treated in an inpatient facility at the surgery unit at the V.I.Lenin City Hospital. He received appropriate medical aid there. The child has now been discharged, his condition is satisfactory,” the regional administration said.

Also, on May 26 a 13-year-old girl sustained a fragment injury in the leg, and on May 28, a four-year-old child sustained a fragment injury of soft tissues in the left forearm while walking with his grandmother.

Three more people have been hurt as a result of gunshot wounds in the region’s other cities. For instance, on May 17 a seven-year-old child at a bus stop in Makeyevka sustained a gunshot wound in the right ankle. On May 24, a 17-year-old girl in Horlivka suffered a bullet injury in the chest. A 15-year-old resident of the village of Marynivka in Shakhtarsk District was driving a vehicle on May 15, when he came under fire near a roadblock in the town of Snizhne.

“The child was delivered to the regional children’s clinic hospital with a penetrating abdomen injury with multiple bowel injuries and was promptly operated on. His condition now remains critical,” the spokesperson said.

On May 28 an eight-year-old child in Donetsk sustained a fragment injury in the right shin. After receiving medical aid at a regional trauma hospital he continued getting treatment as an outpatient. The child’s condition is satisfactory.
