The share of domestic medicines in public procurement, based on monitoring of 90 public tenders held in 2014, was a mere 6 percent, while Ukrainian drugs cover 70 percent of the mass demand market.

According to an annual analytical report by the Anticorruption Action Centre on corruption in public medicine procurement, in monetary terms the purchase of domestic medicines in 2014 amounted to UAH 65.406 million out of UAH 1.101 billion. Medical products rank second in terms of imports after gas.

According to experts, such situation threatens the national security of Ukraine, as in this case the state and patients are almost totally dependent on foreign exchange and supplies.

“Resolving the issue of lack of domestic preparations for the treatment of lethal diseases, in particular AIDS, tuberculosis, and hepatitis, should become the priority of Ukraine’s internal state policy,” the report reads .
