You're reading: Shells hit Donetsk Local History Museum

An artillery attack devastated the roof and walls of the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History in the Voroshylovsky district, the City Council said in a report posted on its Web site.

The online publication OstroV confirmed the extensive damage. “There was a direct hit. The roof and two stairwells are destroyed and windows are smashed. The nature hall, the small exhibition hall and the ethnography hall are damaged,” eyewitnesses told the edition.

The museum personnel are trying to clean up the mess.

The City Council said the shelling had razed a residential building and damaged another two in the Voroshylovsky district.

An updated report of the Emergency Situations Ministry said an artillery round had pierced through a wall of a five-story house on Cheliuskintsiv Street and smashed windows of the Erudyt lyceum on the same street. Several private homes on Kotsiubynsky Street also suffered damage.

The cannonade woke up people on Aug. 21 morning. They said the explosions were heard in the Leninsky, Kyivsky, Kuibyshevsky and Voroshylovsky districts. “Tensions persisted in Donetsk at 09:30. Yet public utility services and transport are working normally,” the City Council said.
