You're reading: Speaker of Crimean parliament says decree on referendum is absolutely legal

Volodymyr Konstantynov, chairman of the Supreme Council of Crimea, said the decree issued by the parliament of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to hold an all-Crimean referendum is absolutely legitimate.

“In a situation where there is an illegal administration in Kyiv, in a
situation when there is a physical threat to the life of the people of
Crimea and colossal destabilization, the Supreme Council today has made a
decision to hold an all-Crimean referendum. It’s an absolutely
legitimate document. The people who are in the Crimean parliament are
politically responsible people, we are trying to reflect the current
tendencies in society and give them certain guarantees,” Konstantynov
was quoted as saying by the press center for the Supreme Council of
Crimea on Thursday.

Konstantynov said, citing tentative estimations, that “over 70% of
the people of Crimea support the inclusion of the Autonomous Republic of
Crimea into the Russian Federation.”

“Why do people support it? Russia has strong leadership, there are
guarantees of protection and stability there. The people of Crimea are
not asking for some golden mountains, they want to keep what they have,
they want to live and work calmly, raise their children. Many people in
Crimea see protection in Russia,” he said.
