You're reading: State Department sees Lavrov’s claims on US involvement in Ukraine events as absurd

U.S. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki has called absurd Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's claims on Washington's role in a number of events in Ukraine.

“I think many of the claims he made in his interview are ludicrous
and they’re not based in fact of what is happening on the ground. The
actions of the Ukrainian government are a legitimate response by the
authorities to react to the illegal armed seizure of buildings in a few
towns in eastern Ukraine,” she said at a briefing on Wednesday.

According to Psaki, Lavrov’s “comments do not include any indication
of a [Russian] plan to implement the Geneva statement, to follow through
on promises made, and his rhetoric is counterproductive and
inflammatory.”

When asked with which claims made by Lavrov Washington disagrees
Psaki said: “One was certainly that the United States has anything to do
with Ukraine’s counterterrorism operations.”

She also described as incorrect the assumption that Washington could run a number of actions in Kyiv.

“I would put those all in the ludicrous category,” she added.

Lavrov said on Wednesday that the U.S. authorities had a direct impact on the actions of the present authorities in Kyiv.
