The State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service of Ukraine has said that the number of cases of rabies in Ukraine this year have grown.

“The situation with rabies arouses the largest alarm. This year it was established that 1,550 sites have problems with rabies, which is 470 more than last year,” Head of the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service of Ukraine Volodymyr Horzheyev said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He said that earlier the northeast regions were considered those where rabies was revealed. However, today the disease is localized in central, southern and western regions.

Horzheyev said that the situation could have improved with the mass peroral immunization of carnivores, which are the key virus agents. However, he said that the state does not have Hr 166 million required for the campaign.

He said that the peroral immunization is conducted only in six regions due to a lack of funds. Horzheyev said that the number of cases of rabies is falling in those regions where the immunization is performed.
