You're reading: Taruta: Referendum on state system to unite Ukraine

An all-Ukrainian referendum will help unite the country around the idea of reform and the introduction of European standards, Chairman of Donetsk Regional State Administration Serhiy Taruta has said.

“It is planned to raise at the referendum the issues of the transfer of additional powers to the regions of Ukraine and the creation of municipal police,” the press service of the regional state administration quoted him as saying at a meeting with Acting President and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov.

The meeting was also attended by Donetsk Mayor Oleksandr Lukianchenko.

Taruta said that it was necessary to hold a referendum on May 25 – the day of the presidential elections in Ukraine.

Taruta submitted for consideration by Turchynov the legislative initiatives helping to hold the referendum on that date.

“We have consolidated our efforts to ensure that civil peace, order and concord reign in Ukraine. All citizens in our country must have the opportunity to express their views on the issues that really concern them. At this stage the final word is for the Verkhovna Rada deputies,” Taruta said.

Lukianchenko, in turn, said that holding such a referendum would help reduce socio-political tensions in the country’s southeastern regions.

The press service did not name the date and place of the meeting between Taruta and Turchynov.
