U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft and Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski are to report to their governments on the outcome of their meeting with imprisoned former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko in Mena penal colony in Chernihiv region.

After visiting Lutsenko in prison on Monday, Tefft said that Tombinski and he would report to their respective governments about the prisoner’s health and about their conversation.

He noted that the United States had repeatedly said that the criminal cases against Lutsenko are evidence of the selective use of justice, which must be stopped by releasing the ex-minister.

The EU ambassador for his part said that the European Union would continue to closely monitor the situation, in particular the way Lutsenko’s appeal against his sentence is considered, and the way Ukraine complies with the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights.
