You're reading: Teixeira: Possible date for Ukraine-EU Summit not discussed yet

The key issues of the Ukraine-EU summit, including its date and place, have not been discussed yet, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira has said.

“In previous years, as a rule these summits were declared in advance
and were always perceived as ones that will definitely take place.
Nobody doubted that the summit would be held. Today, we have not yet
started discussing the date, the venue of the summit or the issues to be
raised at the summit,” he said in an interview with the Ukrayinska
Pravda Internet publication posted on Thursday.

The diplomat said that should the summit take place, it would be held on the territory of the EU.

“Someone has to make this decision – and it won’t be me – on whether
this summit will take place. If it does, it should be held at the level
of the heads of states – [European Council] President [Herman] Van
Rompuy representing the European side and President [Viktor] Yanukovych
representing Ukraine,” Teixeira said.

He also said that the EU was aware of the upcoming elections in
Ukraine. According to him, the EU also pays great attention to several
other issues – politically motivated criminal cases, the use of
selective justice and the upcoming elections.

“Therefore today there is no confirmation that the appropriate conditions for the summit will be created,” he said.

The EU-Ukraine summit is held annually. Teixeira will serve as the
head of the EU Delegation in Ukraine until fall. Then he will head the
EU delegation in Cape Verde.
