Serous meningitis is being registered in residents of three villages and various micro-districts of the city of Malyn, Zhytomyr oblast of Ukraine, the Main Department of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service in Zhytomyr region has reported.

Lab tests have confirmed serous meningitis in one adult. Ten children diagnosed with serous meningitis received treatment in the infectious disease section of the Malyn Central District Hospital as of July 30.

“It has been determined that all people diagnosed with the disease have not left the country, led an active lifestyle (spent time outdoors ad swam in bodies of water. None of these cases are connected,” the report says.

A set of preventive and anti-epidemic measures is being conducted to stabilize the epidemiological situation in the areas where the disease has been registered. The disease was most likely caused by the West Nile virus and enteroviruses.

According to earlier reports, an outbreak of serous meningitis was registered in Lviv region. A total of 29 cases of serous meningitis were registered from the beginning of July to July 25, and 13 of those cases were children aged under 17.
