You're reading: Tensions persist in Donetsk, sporadic explosions heard

Tensions persist in Donetsk, the City Council press service said on Thursday, Sep. 18.

“Residents of northern parts of the Kyivsky district, the Biriuzova and Abakumova Mine compounds say they have sporadically heard the sound of firing and explosions, which presumably came from the airport. The city’s public utility services are working,” the press service said.

Tap water supply has been relatively steady in Donetsk, excluding in a part of the Kuibyshevsky district and some areas of the Leninsky and Kirovsky districts.

Most complaints have been coming from the Petrovskyi district, where tap water problems have occurred in the Mine No. 29 camp. Specialists are trying to provide at least minimal water supply in that area, the City Council reported.

While doing pre-commissioning works in the city water mains and stations, specialists are also repairing ruptured water pipes. In the past 24 hours repairmen did away with 32 water mains emergencies and 38 sewage network emergencies. Ruptured pipes are being repaired on Elektronna Street in the Kuibyshevsky district, Shevchenko Street in the Kalininsky district and Prokhorivska Street in the Proletarsky district.

In turn, Kyiv reported bombardments in south-eastern Ukraine.

An officer of the State Emergency Service was killed and three servicemen were injured in the anti-terrorist operation zone in south-eastern Ukraine over the past day, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Thursday, Sep. 18.

“Gunfire was recorded over the past day in the area of Pisky, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Oleksandrivka, Novomykhailivka, Tonenke, Maroorlivka, Orlovo-Ivanivka, Nyzhnia Krynka, Tsentralne, Hranitne, Debaltseve, Donetske and Starohnativka in Donetsk region,” Lysenko said.

Donetsk airport came under automatic weapons and artillery fire and many residential buildings around it were damaged, he said. “Over the past day, our units repelled one attack and recorded four bombardments,” Lysenko stated.

In his words, Hirne, Zolote, Orikhove, Chornukhyne, Luhanska, Severodonetsk and Schastia in Luhansk region were opened fire on.
