You're reading: Three or 4 metro stations to close on days of Euro 2012 matches

During Euro 2012 in Kyiv, traffic will not be significantly affected, except for on the days the matches are held, according to the first deputy head of the main transport and communication department of Kyiv City State Administration, Ivan Shpyliovy.

According to him, on non-match days during Euro 2012 traffic will be restricted only on Khreschatyk Street, from Independence Square to Shevchenko Boulevard, where a fan zone will operate for the whole of the championship.

At the same time, on match days traffic will be barred from the one-and-a-half kilometer transport zone from the stadium and official fan zone. On the days of matches, these zones will be closed to traffic four hours before the beginning of the match and one hour after the match ends.

On non-match days during Euro 2012 transport with special passes will be able to enter the traffic-restricted zones, as well as citizens of the nearby houses and special transport: police, ambulance, emergencies services, and emergency transport.

As Shpyliovy said, on the days matches are held, the Palace of Sports and Olympiysky metro stations, and if required, Khreschatyk, are to be completely shut. Independence Square metro station will be completely closed for entry and exit for the whole time the fan zone is open, from June 28 to July 7.

It is currently under discussion whether Boryspil airport will work at night on the days of matches, as some fans will arrive only for the match, and airports in Europe do not function at night. European airports will decide how to handle planes departing from Boryspil. Otherwise, a waiting zone is to be created, in which passengers departing Ukraine can wait until the airport opens.
