You're reading: Three suspected of Zaporizhia Church blast arrested, says interior minister

Ukrainian Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohyliov has said that three people have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in setting off a bomb at the Intercession Church in Zaporizhia.

"There is a court ruling on their arrest," the interior minister said during his meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Kyiv on Friday, the presidential press service reported.

According to preliminary reports, the motive for the blast was revenge, Mohyliov said.

According to earlier media reports, a churchwarden and his brother are suspected of placing a homemade bomb into the Intercession Church. The suspect had worked in this church, collecting donations from parishioners, but was fired when he was caught stealing money, media said. However, the clergymen of the church have rejected this version of events. On Friday, August 6, around 60 parishioners of the Intercession Church staged a rally in defense of the arrested churchwarden, Yevhen Fedorchenko.

The law-enforcers promised the president to solve the case within a week and refused to comment on any of the version.

As reported, an explosion occurred at the Intercession Church (subordinate to Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate) in the center of Zaporizhia at around 1630 on July 28. Nine people were injured in the blast, and an injured died later in hospital.

A criminal case on the blast was opened. Several people were detained on suspicion of organizing the blast.
