You're reading: Tigipko: 2013 should be pilot for land reform

The moratorium on the sale of farmland in Ukraine should be prolonged for at least one year, according to Vice Premier and Deputy Chairman of Party of Regions, Sergiy Tigipko.

“We cannot open the land market,” he said in an interview with the Den newspaper published on October 12, 2012.

He said that first the new land laws should be tested in a pilot regime, and then it would be introduced all over the country.

“We can’t allow ourselves to make any mistakes. Land reform is very important both for the people and the country, so we shouldn’t rush it. People can gain from the creation of a transparent market, but they could lose if the rules are imperfect,” Tigipko said.

He also said he supported the sale and purchase of land by companies, but only if a new mechanism is tested during pilot projects in practice.

“So 2013 should be a pilot year for land reform,” he said.
