You're reading: Tombinski: EU expects Ukraine to make changes to constitution

The European Union is still ready to help Ukraine both financially and with experience in the transformation of state institutions, as well as provide technical assistance. "The EU is trying to help Ukraine stabilize, but we will be able to help only when Ukraine wants this itself. This should be the decision on behalf of the Ukrainian democracy," Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski said at the seventh Kyiv Security Forum.

“This Ukrainian decision must go through the constitutional process
as soon as possible, because the constitution is of fundamental
importance in a democratic system. And this must be associated with
systemic changes rather than changes in the signs of some structures,”
the diplomat said.

At the same time, the head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine noted that the Ukrainian government shares this position of Europe.

“The rights of citizens must be defended regardless of who is in power,” he stressed.

Furthermore, Tombinski noted that the prompt holding of presidential
elections would facilitate the stabilization of the situation.
