Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov has said that if peace initiatives of Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko are not backed in Donbas, there's no alternative to declaring martial law in the region.

“If peace initiatives of the Head of State aren’t backed we’ll have
no other alternative than to declare martial law and resolve the
situation in a military way,” the press service of the parliament quoted
Turchynov on June 27.

According to him, the Ukrainian president is looking for ways to resolve the situation peacefully.

“As of today, the most important thing we have accomplished is
surrounding the militants, which considerably limits their outside
supply channels of reinforcements, weapons, etc. If we maintain the
position on eastern border then, I’m sure, we in fact will be able to
stop the conflict completely,” Turchynov said.

When analyzing the events in eastern Ukraine, Turchynov said that a
full-scale military intervention by Russia is happening today. It can be
prevented only by closing borders completely.

“From our side, the opposition to eternal and internal aggression
comes in the format of the anti-terrorist operation. It is caused by the
specifics of Ukrainian laws. As until martial law is declared on this
territory, we can only conduct anti-terrorist operation,” he said.

In addition, Verkhovna Rada Chairman said that early parliamentary
elections are needed, but they can be conducted only after the
stabilization of the situation in the east.

“War and elections are incompatible,” Turchynov said.
