You're reading: Turchynov: Russian aggression will not hamper Ukraine’s democratic development

The Ukrainian authorities are doing their best to restore the economy and stabilize the government in the country, despite Russian aggression, Acting Ukrainian President and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov has said. "The question of stabilization would go faster if there were no aggression from the Russian Federation," the Ukrainian parliament's press service quoted him as saying at a meeting with Co-Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Bob Corker on April 23.

Turchynov said that “Russian leaders are seeking to restore an empire like the Soviet Union.”

He said that Ukrainian citizens were ready to defend their country, its development and selection. He said that Ukraine had currently received a historic opportunity to become a truly democratic, European and civilized country.

“Despite everything, we will continue to restore the economy and stabilize government,” he said, noting that an important stage for this is to hold fair and transparent presidential elections.

Turchynov said he was confident that Ukraine would still be a European and democratic state, which will only get stronger in these difficult conditions.

Corker, in turn, said the United States was ready to help Ukraine in every way on its road to qualitative changes.

He said that Ukraine could count on U.S. support for democratic and qualitative changes.
