Moscow - Ukraine, as expected, purchased 33 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas last year, the head of the Gazprom foreign economic operations department said during a conference call.

“As expected, Ukraine [purchased] at the level of 33 billion cubic meters in aggregate under a contract with Ostchem Holding Limited in 2012,” he said.

He did not offer a prediction for how much gas Ukraine will need this year, saying only that Ukraine is declaring a reduction, but much will depend on the weather.

The forecast balance of the receipt and distribution of natural gas in 2012 envisioned the import by Naftogaz Ukrainy of 27 bcm and by Cyprus-based Ostchem Holding, Ltd., controlled by businessman Dmytro Firtash, of 8.124 bcm.
