You're reading: Ukraine cancels plan to drop winter time change

Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday cancelled a plan to put the former Soviet republic permanently on daylight saving time, after widespread protests in the west of the country.

Parliament overturned a previous decision to align Ukraine with neighbouring Russia and Belarus. On Oct. 30, clocks will again go back one hour as they have in previous years.

Ukrainian deputies, justifying their earlier decision, had argued that the constant switching between winter and summer time harmed people’s health and caused stress.

Ukraine will from the end of this month be two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) until at least next spring.

Parliament did not decide whether Ukraine would remain on winter time after spring or not.
