Ukraine should decide whether to join the Customs Union or the European Union, Chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok has said.

“The position of European institutions – the European Parliament, the European Commission is clear – Ukraine cannot be simultaneously a member of the Customs Union and the EU, sign agreements with the Customs Union and the EU, cannot have a free trade zone with both the organizations, ” he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.

He stressed that it was time for Ukraine to choose what would be in the country’s interests in the long term and disregard short-term benefits.

At the same time, Brok expressed the opinion that Ukraine should have good economic and political relations with Russia.

Commenting on the cancelled visit of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to Moscow, Brok said: “He (Yanukovych) made this in the interests of Ukraine.”
