Three hackers have received five-year prison terms with three-year deferment for developing and trying to provide banks with malware, called Carberp, that would have enabled them to steal money from the accounts of their clients, the Ukrainian Security Service said.

The hackers, who were convicted by a court in Kyiv, were caught in various parts of Ukraine and Russia in March in a joint operation by the Security Service of Ukraine and Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia, the service said in a statement.

One of the three hackers, a Russian national who organized the illicit business, was arrested in Odesa, Ukraine.

Sophisticated computer equipment was seized from them, the statement said.
