You're reading: Ukraine could become world’s second largest grain exporter, says UGA

Ukraine's exports in the 2013/2014 marketing year (MY, July-June) of nearly 30.2 million tonnes of grain, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), will rank it second among the world's largest exporters of grain, according to the Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA). 

According to a press release from the UGA, the United States will as usual come first in the raking, with an expected figure of 69.65 million tonnes, while the EU countries will rank third (29.25 million tonnes).

According to analysts from APK-Inform, in the last marketing year, Ukraine ranked seventh in the world, exporting almost 23 million tonnes of grain.

As reported, the USDA improved its August forecast for the grain harvest in Ukraine this season by nearly five million tonnes and exports by 3.5 million tonnes – to 59 million tonnes and 30.2 million tonnes respectively.

According to the forecast of the Ukrainian Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food, the country’s grain harvest in 2013 will exceed 57 million tonnes, against 46.2 million tonnes in 2012. Its exports, according to the ministry, could reach 28 million tonnes.
