You're reading: Ukraine Defense Ministry: Nearly 62,000 get draft notices

Nearly 62,000 Ukrainians have received draft notices since January 20, the day Ukraine launched the first of this year's planned three waves of emergency military conscription, the Defense Ministry announced on Jan. 26.

“Since the start of the wave of mobilization, 61,748 citizens liable for military service have received draft notices, which is 51.7 percent of the target. Moreover, needs for technical equipment have been clarified completely,” spokeswoman Viktoriya Kushnir told a briefing in Kyiv.

She said draftees were being distributed through the various services on the basis of medical examinations but that all the draftees would serve. Serious attention was being paid to the psychological selection of candidates for various services, Kushnir said.

The draftees would be sent to training centers on January 28 and January 30, she added.

She said, besides, that work was continuing to compile a combined single register of Ukrainians liable for military service. So far the list names draft dodgers, and afterward the latter would face prosecution, she said.

The second wave of mobilization would take place in April and the third one in June under an order by the National Security and Defense Council.
