You're reading: Ukraine denies recognition to South Ossetian election

The presidential election in South Ossetia has no value for Kyiv because Ukraine views that territory as a part of Georgia, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Voloshyn answered an Interfax-Ukraine question.

"The Ukrainian position is unwavering; it is well known to our international partners that we recognize Georgian statehood within the borders officially recognized by the majority of members of the international community and these borders include South Ossetia. Therefore, the outcome of the South Ossetian election has no significance for us," he said.

Ukraine does not recognize the independence of South Ossetia, he said.

South Ossetia held the first round of the presidential election on Nov. 13, but neither candidate won. The second round is due on Nov. 27 between Anatoly Bibilov and Alla Jioyeva.

The European Union and NATO have said they do not acknowledge the election as legitimate.
