You're reading: Ukraine harvests 32 million tonnes of grain from 79% of fields by September 28

Ukraine as of September 28, 2012, had threshed 32.1 million tonnes of grain from 11.8 million hectares, or 79% of the area to be harvested in the country, the press service of the Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry has reported.

According to the ministry, the average yield of grain crops in the country was 27.3 centners (a metric centner equals 100 kilograms, or 220.46 pounds) per hectare, while on the same date last year it was 31.8 centners per hectare.

In addition, farmers threshed 6.1 million tonnes of corn in grain from 1.6 million hectares, or 36% of the target. The average yield of that crop was 37.8 centners per hectare, whereas on the same date last year it was 54.1 centners per hectare.

Ukraine also harvested 215,000 tonnes of buckwheat from 222,000 hectares (81% of the planned area), with its average yield being 9.7 centners per hectare against last year’s 11.2 centners per hectare.

According to the ministry, farmers threshed 160,000 tonnes of millet from 136,000 hectares (88% of the area), with its average yield being 11.8 centners per hectare (19.5 centners per hectare in 2011).

As of September 28, farmers had threshed 81,000 tonnes of rice from 13,000 hectares (49% of the area). The average yield of the crop is 64 centners per hectare.

Farmers also harvested 5.3 million tonnes of sunflower seeds from 3.5 million hectares (74% of the area), with the average yield being 15.2 centners per hectare (18.2 centners in 2011), and 1.13 million tonnes of soybeans from 744,000 hectares (51% of the area), with its average yield being 15.2 centners per hectare, compared to 19.7 centners per hectare last year.

Sugar beets have been harvested from 119,000 hectares, or 26% of the area. Farmers dug 4.1 million tonnes of sugar beets, with the average yield being 343 centners per hectare, against 348 centners per hectare last year.
