Ukraine International Airlines (UIA, Kyiv) on Sept. 29 received a notice from Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) of the ban on flying to Russia from Oct. 25.

“Due to the ban announced by the State Aviation Service of Ukraine on Russian airlines’ scheduled flights to/from Ukraine during the ‘2015/2016 winter’ IATA schedule season, we hereby inform you that in accordance with the order issued by the Transport Ministry of Russia based on provisions of the agreement signed between Russian and Ukrainian governments on air communications and cooperation in air transport, the permit will not be issued to UIA with regard to its scheduled flights to/from Russia during the ‘2015/2016 winter’ IATA schedule season unless the Ukrainian ban on flying to/from Ukraine imposed on Russian airlines has been lifted,” the notification that was made available to Interfax-Ukraine says.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko issued a decree on Sept. 16 giving legal effect to the decision of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, dated Sept. 2, whereby the council ruled “on imposition of personal special economic and other restrictive measures [sanctions]” to affect a number of Russian airlines, including the largest one, Aeroflot.

Similar sanctions have been implemented with regard to the following Russian air carriers: the 224th Flight Unit, VIM Airlines, Gazpromavia, Donavia Airlines, Kogalymavia Airlines Ltd., Orenburg Airlines Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Aircompany Polet, Red Wings, State Transport Company Rossiya – Russian Airlines, RusJet, RusLine, Siberia Airlines, Transaero Airlines, Ural Airlines, Yakutia Airlines, Yamal Airlines, and others. Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers moved on Sept. 25 to blacklist the Russian carriers, banning their flights to Ukraine.

On Sept. 29, Rosaviatsia advised Ukrainian air carriers of the ban on using Russian airspace from Oct. 25.
