You're reading: Ukraine International Airlines plane to fly to Japan to evacuate Ukrainians

A plane owned by Kyiv-based Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) is to fly to Japan on March 16 to evacuate Ukrainian citizens at the request of the Emergencies Ministry and the Foreign Ministry.

"The departure from Boryspil airport is scheduled for 19.00. In order to conduct a flight, we need to get from Japan a confirmation of the status of a humanitarian flight," UIA spokesperson Yevhenia Satska told Interfax-Ukraine.

She said that the aircraft would conduct a flight on the Kyiv-Narita route and land in Krasnoyarsk, Russia for refueling.

Around 3,800 people are believed to have been killed in the recent devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, while 8,200 people are listed as missing. Over 2,200 people listed as injured as of 1600 local time.
