You're reading: Ukraine may hold state structure referendum jointly with presidential election

The Ukrainian Central Election Commission has allowed for the possibility of holding a nationwide referendum simultaneously with the May 25 presidential election on the condition of a relevant legislative basis. "If the all-Ukraine referendum is scheduled for May 25, the Central Election Commission will be prepared to hold it on the condition of a relevant legislative basis," Central Elections Commission Chairman Mykhailo Okhendovsky told Interfax.

Earlier on April 14 Ukrainian interim President Oleksandr Turchynov did
not rule out the possibility of combining an all-Ukrainian referendum
and a presidential election on May 25.

“I am confident that an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians will vote
for an indivisible, independent, democratic and unitary Ukraine at a
referendum, which may be held simultaneously with the presidential
election if the parliament decides upon this,” Turchynov said.
