You're reading: Ukraine not ready to apply for EU membership yet, says Ambassador Tombinski

Head of the EU Delegation in Ukraine Jan Tombinski believes that at the moment there is no prerequisite for Ukraine's application for a membership in the European Union.

“It is better to submit such applications after the discussion with your partners, they are willing to accept this, because it makes no sense to file such applications and receive a negative response… Today, there are no prerequisites to submit such applications,” he said at a meeting of the Diplomats without Ties press club in Kyiv on Dec. 18.

The European Union needs to see which way Ukraine will go in the next five years, namely how the reforms will be introduced and implemented, he said speaking about Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko’s intent to bid for the EU membership in 2020.
