A unified defense unit composed of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's volunteer battalions will be made in accordance with the Interior Ministry reform, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

Avakov said at a press conference in Kyiv on Oct. 2 that the Interior Ministry reform, including the creation of a unified defense unit, would be discussed at the cabinet meeting next week. He said the work of many special divisions of the Interior Ministry would be terminated at that meeting.

“One big special unit will be created. It will be like the American SWAT. We believe that the majority of these guys will make up the foundation of this unit,” the minister said.

A considerable number of the best-trained troops will join the National Guard and “will improve their professionalism during special operations,” Avakov said.
