Ukraine has reached an agreement in principle about getting observer status in the Customs Union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, which can be formalized at a meeting with the leadership of this organization in late May, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

“An agreement in principle has been reached… At this stage, I believe the decision has been taken, and technical matters remain,” he said at a meeting with foreign journalists in Kyiv on Tuesday.

This status will allow Ukraine to have its representative at the Customs Union, attend sessions of the union’s board and express its opinions without the right to vote, Azarov said.

“At least, we will be informed of all their decisions,” he said.

The Ukrainian cabinet has already formed a group to be put in charge of bringing the country’s technical guidelines in line with the technical guidelines of the trilateral union, the prime minister said.

Azarov said earlier that the presidents of the Customs Union member states and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych would discuss the possibility of granting observer status in the union to Ukraine at a meeting in late May.
