Ukraine is insisting on the lawfulness of its decision to restrict the import of cars, although the country is ready to carry out consultations on possible compensation to Russia and other countries affected by the decision, the Economic Development and Trade Ministry reported last week after a meeting of the Council for Trade in Goods of the World Trade Organization (WTO) held on July 11, 2013.

“Due to a report by Russia on its plans to suspend some concessions, the Ukrainian delegation pointed to the country’s desire to find mutual agreement with Russia and other WTO members, which will foresee compensation, [and have] the smallest negative impact on international trade,” reads the report of the ministry.

The ministry said that at the meeting Japan said that Kyiv’s special protective measures are non-transparent and groundless, and several days earlier Russia said that it plans to impose trade sanctions on Ukraine, penalizing imports of chocolate, coal and glass, in retaliation for Ukraine’s special import tax on cars. The Ukrainian delegation said that the decision to introduce the special duties was a result of a thorough investigation that established there had been serious damage to national producers.
