You're reading: Ukraine regulator tells providers to stop relaying Euronews’ Russian version

Ukraine's National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council on Aug.14 urged television providers to stop relaying the Russian version of the Euronews channel.

Today, two versions of Euronews – one Ukrainian and one Russian – are
broadcasted in Ukraine. This is illegal, the council said in a statement.

“We wish to point out that, under the license agreement between the
National Television Company of Ukraine and the Euronews company of
France, the National Television Company of Ukraine holds the exclusive
right to the broadcasting of the Euronews channel through any relay
system on Ukrainian territory. A separate section of this agreement
declares that broadcasting of Euronews’ Russian service must be
discontinued,” the statement said.

It furthermore cited council deputy head Olha Herasymiuk as saying
that the Russian version “is, besides, the product of the Russian
service and is essentially propagandistic.” Providers should “be aware of
their own responsibility and act in the national interest” she added.

The council said it would send out letters to providers urging them
to “revise their current contracts and disconnect the Russian version of
Euronews.”
