Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Eduard Stavytsky thinks that his country and Russia will agree to a price reduction for Russian gas this year.

“I think they [Russia] have begun to hear our position. I think there will be agreement this year,” Stavytsky told the press in Kyiv Wednesday when asked if Russia’s position on revising gas contracts and lowering the price of Russian gas for Ukraine had changed.

Stavytsky said he is confident the price will come down in any event, since natural prices are coming down on world spot markets. The gas price on Ukraine’s own market could also decrease due to the country diversifying sources of the gas it needs, he said.

The price for gas on the Ukrainian market will be lower before the next heating season, Stavytsky said.
