You're reading: Ukraine submits draft UN resolution over support for territorial integrity

Ukraine has submitted for consideration to the United Nations General Assembly a draft resolution backing the country's territorial integrity, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

“The draft already exists. It is now being actively discussed in the
UN,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis said at a briefing,
adding that the document was submitted by Ukraine.

“We suggest that the UN General Assembly confirm the sovereignty,
independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine in the framework of
the internationally recognized borders,” the spokesman said.

The draft resolution also calls for peaceful resolution of the
situation and warns against unilateral actions aimed at violating the
territorial integrity of Ukraine. The document also recognizes the
Crimean referendum illegitimate and such that it cannot be a basis for
reviewing the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and
Sevastopol.

“The resolution also contains an appeal not to recognize any change
in the status of Crimea and Sevastopol on the basis of this referendum
and to refrain from actions aimed at recognizing this status,”
Perebyinis said.

The question of Crimea’s demilitarization is not included in the draft resolution, he also added.

The UN General Assembly is gathering in New York on March 27.
