You're reading: Ukraine to funnel some $7.45 million into construction of ‘wall’ on border with Russia

The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has issued a decree ordering the Defense Ministry to provide Hr 100 million (some $7.45 million at the current forex rate as of Sep. 18, set at Hr 13.425024 per U.S. dollar), previously earmarked by the government from the national budget's reserve fund for border reinforcement.

This is stipulated in Cabinet resolution No. 448 dated Sep. 10, 2014 (the document was published on Thursday, Sep. 18).

The Defense Ministry was also ordered to amend the expenditures financed from the reserve fund and submit them to the Cabinet by Sep. 21 following consultations with the Economic Development and Trade Ministry, the Regional Development, Construction and Utilities Ministry, and the Finance Ministry.

The government also ordered the Defense Ministry to report to the Economic Development and Trade Ministry, Finance Ministry and the State Treasury Service by Dec. 28 on the use of the allocated funds.

According to earlier reports, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said in an interview with a Ukrainian television channel on Sep. 12 that the Ukrainian Cabinet had provided Hr 100 million for the ‘Stina’ (Wall) project. Yatsenyuk said the sum is only the first tranche of the funds needed for the project.
