You're reading: Ukraine to prevent conflicts during its presidency in Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe

Ukraine, during its presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), will make efforts to prevent conflicts and strengthen the security of OSCE member countries, Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn has said.

"Ukraine, as part of its [OSCE] presidency, will work on the prevention [of conflicts] and the strengthening of security on the territory of the countries that are part of the OSCE," he reporters at the coast of Lake Sevan in Armenia on Tuesday.

Lytvyn said that according to experts, there were more than a hundred conflicts in the former Soviet countries, including the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.

Speaking about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Lytvyn said that Ukraine would do its utmost to ensure that a well-thought-out and balanced decision was taken and that international principles were taken into account.

"We will be absolutely objective, we will not be biased, and we will motivate the parties to take an acceptable decision that will suit Azerbaijan and Armenia," he said.

As reported, Ukraine will preside over the OSCE in 2013.
