Ukraine will strengthen control on the border with the Russian Federation and Belarus to prevent the penetration of African swine fever (ASF), reads a press release from the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food of Ukraine.

“We have been working in emergency mode for a long time. However, we need to tighten control on the border with Russia and Belarus as much as possible, specifically to completely restrict the movement of people and freight outside special checkpoints. Consequently, we need to introduce permanent barriers on these borders,” reads a statement citing Agricultural Minister of Ukraine Mykola Prysiazhniuk.

According to the report, the issue regarding ASF in the near future will be discussed at the meetings of the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security and Defense Council, as this virus “threatens the food security of the country.”
