You're reading: Ukraine, US to hold joint military exercise

Some 1,400 servicemen from 16 countries will take part in the Ukrainian-U.S. Rapid Trident 2012 military exercise.

The two-week drills started on Monday at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Lviv region, the press service of the Rapid Trident 2012 reported.

A total of 883 Ukrainian soldiers and officers from eight units and 13 corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as 167 servicemen from the United States, 90 servicemen from Moldova, 45 from Poland, and 43 from Serbia, are taking part in this year’s exercises. Three detachments of the armed forces of Georgia, Macedonia and Romania are also contributing to the drills for the first time.

The scenario for the maneuvers is based on the situation in Zabul province of Afghanistan.

Rapid Trident 2012 ends on July 27.
