MOSCOW - Ukraine has decided to change its non-bloc status in the hope of receiving financial assistance from the West, Leonid Kalashnikov, first deputy chairman of the State Duma committee on international affairs, said.

“Of course, it is needed primarily for express their acute dislike of Russia once again, it’s obvious,” Kalashnikov told Interfax on Dec. 24.

On the other hand, he believes Ukraine has decided to change its non-bloc status “in the hope of receiving some financial assistance from the West.”

The Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday made changes to the laws On the Foundations of Domestic and Foreign Policy and On the Foundations of the National security of Ukraine. These changes envisage a change of the country’s non-bloc status.

The explanatory note attached to the document states that the non-bloc status of Ukraine turned out to be ineffective for ensuring the country’s security. “the non-bloc status of Ukraine, which was outlined in the law On the Foundations of Domestic and Foreign Policy, turned out to be ineffective in the context of ensuring the security of the state from foreign aggression and pressure,” the note says.

The explanatory note states that the decision to change the non-bloc status of Ukraine was made because of the Russian policies on Ukraine.
