The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has instructed the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico to check media reports that a Ukrainian tourist was found dead in this country.

“The Foreign Ministry instructed the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico to verify this information,” Deputy Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Information Policy Department Vasyl Zvarych told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

TSN (1+1 TV Channel), with reference to law enforcement agencies in Mexico, reported that a 25-year-old Ukrainian tourist was found dead in the state of Yucatan. According to the prosecutor’s office in Yucatan, Oleksandr Batychko’s body, which showed signs of violence, was found on a road in a car that he rented. Police found that the young man rented the car in late December 2012 to visit a few archaeological sites.

“He paid in cash for the rent of the car, and employees of a firm saw a large sum of money in his bag. Batychko arrived in Mexico on vacation and stopped in Playa del Carmen, in the state of Quintana Roo, neighboring Yucatan, where he rented the car,” reads the statement.

Police are studying the circumstances of the death of the Ukrainian citizen. One of the main suspected motives of the killing is robbery, since a large amount of money was stolen.
