You're reading: Ukrainian army to get British APCs, US off-road cars

KHARKIV - The Kharkiv Zonal Department for law and order military service is going to receive Saxon armored personnel carriers (APCs) from the United Kingdom and Humvees from the United States, according to the regional media center of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

“By now the Department has received the first Saxon APC. Other armored vehicles of this type, as well as several U.S. HMMWV army vehicles, are expected to arrive in the next few weeks,” the media center told Interfax-Ukraine.

It is expected that the Saxon and Hummer vehicles will be sent, among other areas, to the special-operation zone, it said. “The foreign armored vehicles will be actively used by us to accompany army convoys, transport personnel, and will also be sent to the anti-terror operation zone where my subordinates have continually been posted,” the media center quoted the Department chief, Oleksandr Leonchenko, as saying.

The Kharkiv military dubbed their first Saxon informally Elisabeth (in honor of the Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), the media center also said.

The Saxon APC has a 2-member crew and can transport up to eight people. It has a four by four wheel formula; length: 5.169 meters; width: 2.489 meters; height: 2.628 meters. Payload: 11.6 tonnes. Maximum highway speed: 96 kilometers per hour. Cruising range: 480 kilometers.
