Ukrainian border guards are preparing a security belt between territories controlled by the Ukrainian army and forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics, a source in the Ukrainian Border Service told Interfax on Thursday, Oct. 23.

“A decision has been made to deploy over 20 control posts in the security belt. Border guards will play the main role but servicemen from other law enforcement agencies will be stationed there as well in order to prevent the illegal movement of arms, contraband goods and extremist means,” Border Service spokesman Oleh Slobodian said.

According to Slobodian, the control posts will be internal and can be crossed with identification documents. Border guards will be checking all cargo as well.

Mobile groups of border guards will operate on the areas between the control posts, Slobodian said.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said earlier that some territories on the Donbas perimeter would be controlled by Ukrainian border guards so that the rest of Ukraine would be protected from militants and the proliferation of weapons.
