You're reading: Ukrainian chanting ‘Free Papua!’ detained in Indonesia, says Foreign Ministry

The police arrested a citizen of Ukraine in Indonesia during a rally dedicated to the 51st anniversary of the Free Papua Movement on December 2.

This organization is considered by the Indonesian government as a
separatist movement, the press secretary of the Ukrainian Foreign
Ministry, Oleksandr Dykusarov, has said.

“During his arrest the Ukrainian citizen shouted ‘Free Papua!'” he said.

According to preliminary information, the Ukrainian had entered Indonesia on a tourist visa that expired four months ago.

“We have asked the competent Indonesian authorities to provide
official information about the Ukrainian citizen, and explain what will
happen to him next. We haven’t received any response so far,” Dykusarov
said.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Indonesia has been in contact with the detainee. He is in prison and is well.
