Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on July 17, in which the Ukrainian leader offered his condolences to the people of the Netherlands on the occasion of a one-year anniversary of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crash, the Ukrainian presidential press service reports.

“Today, just as a year ago, our people condemn this tragedy and express support for and sincere condolences to the families and beloved ones of the dead,” Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko and Rutte discussed the investigation into the disaster and agreed to take all the necessary measures to implement Australia’s, Belgium’s, Malaysia’s, the Netherlands’, and Ukraine’s initiative on the establishment of an international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for the crimes related to the plane’s downing, the Ukrainian presidential press service said.

In this context, the two leaders agreed to instruct the foreign
ministers of the five countries to coordinate their further steps to
advance a draft resolution on the establishment of such a tribunal and
its charter in the UN Security Council.

Poroshenko and Rutte shared the view that this crime poses a threat
to international peace and security and must be duly investigated, and
those responsible must be punished, the Ukrainian presidential press
service said.

“Impunity in this case would set a dangerous precedent,” the Ukrainian leader said.
