Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Swiss President and Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine and the OSCE's role in settling the crisis at a meeting in Vienna on June 24.

Klimkin told Burkhalter about the implementation of a peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to stop violence in the eastern part of the country, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Burkhalter expressed his support for Poroshenko’s peace plan.

Klimkin and Burkhalter “exchanged opinions on involving the OSCE in the practical implementation of the peace plan, in particular, through the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission’s activity in Ukraine and OSCE chairperson-in-office’s special representative Heidi Tagliavini’s participation in the tripartite contact group. In addition, practical steps and the time dimension of the peace plan’s implementation have been discussed,” it said.

The parties emphasized the importance of immediately freeing refugees, including the OSCE observers, being held by members of illegal armed units. They also agreed that Russia’s full support for the peace plan was important.

“Klimkin asked the OSCE chairperson-in-office to help release Ukrainian moviemaker Oleh Sentsov and other citizens of Ukraine who were illegally detained and accused of terrorist activities,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
