You're reading: Ukrainian men top field in World Chess Olympiad

Ukraine took home the gold on Oct. 3 topping the field in the 11th and final round of the 39th World Chess Olympiad at the Complex "Arena Ugra" of Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

The closely-watched tournament, which commenced on Sept. 21, saw the country’s 5-man squad defeat top-seeded Russia.

Team members included Vasyl Ivanchuk (Lviv), Pavel Ehlyanov (Kharkiv), Ruslan Ponomarev (Kyiv), Zakhar Efimenko (Mukachevo), Oleksandr Moiseenko (Kharkiv) and team trainer Volodymr Tukmakov (Odesa).

The second-seeded Ukrainian squaid (19 match points) won the men’s competition with top seed Russia 1 (18 match points) coming in second. Israel took third place.
