You're reading: Ukrainian opposition distances itself from occupiers of three ministries’ buildings

The opposition plays no part in the occupation of the Ukrainian Justice Ministry's building by activists from the Common Cause organization, said Stepan Kubiv, member of the opposition Batkivschyna Party's parliamentary faction.

“These are provocations, we are distancing ourselves from them,” he told the National Resistance Headquarters on Monday.

The opposition is against the seizing of buildings, particularly those of strategic importance, Kubiv said.

“We have been informed that the three attacks on state premises of
special significance were specifically provoked,” the parliamentarian
said.

The takeovers of the Justice Ministry, Fuel and Energy Ministry, and
Agriculture Ministry were needed for “public justification of imposing a
state of emergency,” he said.

“Because there will be a Verkhovna Rada session and a People’s Rada
session, our position is to absolutely rule out yet more bloodshed.
Second, we are against seizure of any buildings, particularly those of
strategic nature, such as the Ministry of Fuel and Energy, the Justice
Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry,” the parliamentarian said.

“We favor peaceful settlement agreements,” he said

It was reported that Common Cause activists occupied the Justice
Ministry building in Kyiv on Sunday night. They claimed that the state
building was seized to provide shelter and heating for activists.

In her televised address Justice Minister Olena Lukash asked the
protestors to vacate the building, otherwise she would have to turn to
the National Security and Defense Council to discuss a possible state of
emergency.

UDAR Party leader Vitali Klitschko entered the building and tried to
persuade the activists to vacate the ministerial building, but the
activists ignored his request.
