Ukrainian lawmakers who smoke in the premises of the parliament will be fined, and smoking areas in the parliament will be closed, MP Yuriy Miroshnychenko of the Regions Party has said.

“Everyone must comply with the law. And people’s deputies are no exceptions in terms of obeying the law. This is why the law that requires limiting and basically eliminating such areas (for smoking) will be observed,” the MP said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine.

He explained that up to 10% of the room in buildings should be allocated for smoking areas, but this does not apply to government institutions.

“Thus, these smoking rooms must be closed in the Verkhovna Rada. This is good news for people’s deputies,” Miroshnychenko said.

According to him, if smoking areas are left in parliament, penalties will be levied against the Verkhovna Rada and the lawmakers who smoke.

“Lawmakers have to remember that they are citizens and must comply with all laws, without exception,” Miroshnychenko said.

He suggested that lawmakers who smoke should leave the building to smoke.
