The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office is conducting a criminal investigation in relation to Judge Rodion Kireyev, who is suspected of handing down an unjust sentence on former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

“The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office is conducting a pretrial investigation under criminal proceedings on motions filed by Tymoshenko and [her public defender Serhiy] Vlasenko regarding officials from the Prosecutor General’s Office, Pechersky District Court of Kyiv, and the Kyiv Court of Appeals and also forensic experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Sciences,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.

In considering the criminal case against Tymoshenko, Kireyev “deliberately, systematically, and grossly violated defendant Tymoshenko’s rights to defense guaranteed by Ukrainian law,” it said.

Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison and deprived of the right to occupy posts in government offices.

The Ukrainian Supreme Court recently invalidated the sentence and closed the criminal case against Tymoshenko due to the absence of a criminal event.
